Electrical grids worldwide are becoming ever more vulnerable to attack, according to this U.S. News and World Report article. One of the main threats is an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) generated by a nuclear weapon detonated a few hundred miles above the target area. Increased vulnerability is due to the proliferation of smart electronics in the grid, virtually all of which would be destroyed by an EMP. Not only would grid electronics be destroyed, but so would every electronic device within a radius of a few hundred miles. A suggested solution is to include EMP protection in the most important electronic devices.
